The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

Custer Gallatin National Forest Projects

IIJA emergency action project to address wildfire risk and insect and disease outbreaks in project area through fuels reduction and forest health treatments.

Fiber optic cable installation within existing utility and road rights-of-way along U.S. Highway 191 in 3 Rivers Telephone Cooperative's Big Sky Exchange. The project area is located approximately from Lava to Karst for 19.2 miles with a 10-foot right-of-way totaling 11.3.

The Burnt Mountain project is adjacent to the at-risk community of Red Lodge, Montana on the Beartooth Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest (CGNF). The project area includes approximately 4,579 acres.

The Custer Gallatin National Forest is proposing timber and fuels treatments on approximately 4400 acres on the Chalk Buttes of the Sioux district. Project docs can be found at https://usfs-public.app.box.com/v/PinyonPublic/folder/373135582987

Land exchange between federal and non-federal lands in the Crazy Mountains west of Melville, MT and the Madison Range south of Big Sky, MT. Also includes trail construction and trailhead improvements.

Create and maintain linear fuel breaks along existing roads and trails in the Goose Creek area, which is about 10 miles southeast of Bozeman.

Fuel management and water source restoration in a portion of the high-risk Bozeman Fireshed. The project area is 7,905 acres south of Bozeman, MT and about 5,500 treatment acres.

The rec residence has been requested to move away from eroding cliff caused by '22 floods. Propose moving to an in-lieu lot in steep creek tract with new water, septic, and site leveling.

Installation of fiber optic line in existing right-of-way (2.13 acres) and new proposed right-of-way (4.19 acres). Methods will include direct burial, with common plowing, trenching and boring construction techniques.

Project updates Herd Management Area Plan, including AML and fertility control, and gather/removal activities to maintain the desired AML for portion of the herd and range that fall under Forest Service authority

Reduce wildfire behavior and provide a safer environment to conduct wildfire suppression. Treat 2,100 acres through commercial harvest, small tree treatments such as cutting/piling, prescribed fire, with 5 mi temp road construction/decommissioning.
